"San Simeon, its Growth, Industries & Famous People" - 3:30 pm 2251 Center
Dr. Dan Krieger, Cal Poly Professor Emeritus of History, and Tribune Columnist will speak about "San Simeon, its Growth, Industries & Famous People" - San Simeon from the earliest times to 1957. Hear about Salinan fisheries, El Rancho San Simeon en la playa, Portuguese shore whaling, quarries and trails, and cinnabar mining and George Hearst, up to the coming of the Roosevelt Highway (One). Krieger's fascinating talks are told with intricate detail and humor, and always entertain as well as inform our audiences, so don't hesitate to make your reservations, as space in our intimate parlor venue is limited. Members of CHS attend free, and the public is warmly invited to attend for a 10.00 fee, which is applicable to the $30.00 membership entitling you to free admittance to our monthly speaker events. Just 6 miles South of Cambria, Harmony population of 18 will host their first-ever Wine & Beer Festival. 18 wineries and craft beer will be on hand. Also in store at the 21-and-older event are gourmet food trucks and live music by power folk duo Bear Market Riot. The Festival is a fund-raiser for Infant Essentials, a Cambria-based nonprofit that provides car seats, diapers, formula, & other needs to homeless & low-income infants in the SLO County area. San Simeon Cove is home to many marine birds, fish, and mammals, and many migratory species come to feed in its nutrient-rich waters in the summer. At the pier, we will use binoculars to explore the inhabitants of San Simeon Bay, followed by collecting and analyzing water samples and plankton to examine water quality. Walk the Forest Loop Trail of the Fiscalini Ranch - 10 am-12:00 pm
Walk the Forest Loop Trail of the Fiscalini Ranch Preserve with a docent from Friends of the Fiscalini Ranch Preserve. Enjoy our Monterey Pine forest as we learn about the plants, animals, human history and the trails in this special part of Cambria. The walk is about 2.5 miles long with very little elevation gain. Bring water, shoes that protect the toes, and wear long pants to help protect from poison oak. Children welcome with adult supervision. Forest Trail walk on Saturday, August 25th-led by Gil.
