Tide pool Field Trips -
Learn about the mystery of San Simeon Cove by beachcombing with marine biologists. Find out what causes high and low tides and explore the plant and animal communities that live between high and low tides. Participants will meet at the Coastal Discovery Center in San Simeon (across from the entrance to Hearst Castle Visitors Center, by the pier). Call 805-927-2145 to reserve a space. Northern Elephant Seal Presentation -
The elephant seal rookery at Piedras Blancas is a dramatic and interesting place to visit year-round. However, the most exciting season is during the winter months when the seals come to shore to birth and mate. Come join Friends of the Elephant Seal docent, Phil Adams, to learn about the amazing life of the Northern Elephant Seal on land and at sea. After the presentation, you will be able to drive to the elephant seal rookery viewing area only 4.5 miles north of the Center which is manned by knowledgeable docents from FES. Participants will meet at the Coastal Discovery Center in San Simeon (across from the entrance to Hearst Castle Visitors Center, by the pier) each Saturday, Jan 20 through March 10th, from 10-10:45 am. Geology of the Ranch - 10 am-noon
Geologist David H. Chipping, Cal Poly Professor, will lead us on a Geology Walk on the Fiscalini Ranch Preserve. He will help us understand the geologic past of the Ranch and surrounding area of Lodge and Park hill. Words like Tectonics, Franciscan Melange and Terraces will take on new meanings after this Walk.
